About IONS (from the IONS-project website)

In 2006, several European Student Chapters of the Optical Society of America decided to collaborate on their research and outreach activities. Getting to know other young scientists on a professional and personal level, discussing science, visiting international research centers, and expanding their personal horizon visiting other countries were the main ideas driving this international effort.

IONS, the International OSA Network of Students, connects you with people from around the globe, all actively engaged in optics and photonics. While ordinary scientific conferences focus strongly on just one particular topic in optics and are rather impersonal, IONS conferences focusses on you. Present your latest results to fellow young scientists from across optics during the scientific sessions, discuss it, and get informed about other young scientist's cutting-edge research projects. Your chapter's activities are at the centre of a whole session at IONS, giving space to discussions about educational outreach activities and more with fellow student chapter members.

Dr. James C. Wyant
2010 OSA President, University of Arizona

James C. Wyant is the dean of the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. He received a BS in physics from Case Western Reserve University and an MS and PhD in optics from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester.

Wyant is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of OSA, SPIE, and the Optical Society of India. He was the 1986 President of SPIE and has held many leadership positions in OSA. He has been an elected member of the OSA Board of Directors and a member of the Executive Committee, the Publications Long-Term Planning Group (chair), Fraunhofer Committee (chair), Adolph Lomb Committee, Education Committee, Finance and Investment Committee, Ives Medal Committee, Investment Subcommittee, Fellows and Honorary Members Committee, and CLEO Optical Metrology Committee.

He has been involved in many journal activities, including the editorial advisory panel of Optics Letters, the associate editor of the Journal of the Optical Society of America (JOSA), associate editor of Applied Optics, topical editor of JOSA, topical editor of Applied Optics, topical editor of Optics Letters, editor of the Optical Technology Division of Applied Optics, associate editor of Optics Express, and editor-in-chief of Applied Optics.

He has received several awards for his technical work, including the OSA Joseph Fraunhofer Award; SPIE Gold Medal; SPIE Technology Achievement Award; R&D 100 Award five times; and Photonics Circle of Excellence awards for optical products five times. He received the University of Rochester College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award and a Doctorado Honoris Causa from the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica in Puebla, Mexico.

Wyant has also been involved in several entrepreneurial activities. He was a co-founder of the WYKO Corporation and 4D Technology and the president of WYKO from 1984 to 1997, when the company was sold to Veeco Instruments. He has served on several boards of directors, including WYKO (chair) from 1984 to 1997, ILX Lightwave from 1988 to the present, Veeco Instruments from 1997 to 1999, Optics 1 from 1999 to 2008, and 4D Technology (chairman) from 2002 to the present.

For his entrepreneurial activities, Wyant has received several awards, including the University of Arizona College of Business and Public Administration Entrepreneurial Fellow; Arizona’s “Innovator of the Year” Product Award; the Tom Brown Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award; and the University of Arizona Technology Innovation Award.

Wyant is the author of more than 300 written publications and invited talks on interferometry, holography and optical testing. He has been the major advisor of 31 graduated PhD students and 25 MS students.

Dr. Jean-luc Doumont
Effective Communication in Science, Principiae

An engineer from the Louvain School of Engineering and PhD in applied physics from Stanford University, Jean-luc Doumont now devotes his time and energy to training engineers, scientists, business people, and other rational minds in effective communication, pedagogy, statistical thinking, and related themes.

Working as an editor of Nature Photonics Rachel's main responsibility is to ensure that the journal publishes top-quality research in all areas of photonics. She assesses and selects high-quality work for peer review, and makes decisions on publications. She also plays an important role in shaping the journal's content by giving ideas on Focus issues, reviews, commentaries and Technology Focus issues. She commissions and edits news articles, and writes research highlights, interviews, editorials and press releases. Attending conferences and visiting research institutions worldwide are also essential in her role to keep her up-to-date with the latest photonics research progress and strengthen links with the scientific community.

Before joining Nature Photonics, Rachel worked for Aston University's Business Partnership Unit in Birmingham, UK, as a research commercialization officer commercializing research output of the university, particularly that of photonics research. She obtained her PhD in microwave photonics and nonlinear optics as a member of Aston's Photonics Research Group. Prior to that, she worked for Philips Optical Storage in Singapore as an Optics Engineer. She holds a Master's degree from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore doing research in optical fibre sensing and a Bachelor's degree from the National University of Malaysia.

Dr. Irina T. Sorokina
Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Women and Minorities OSA

Irina T. Sorokina was born in 1963 in Moscow, Russia. She received her Masters Degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Lomonosov State University in Moscow and Ph.D. degree in Laser Physics from the General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992, and in 2003 a Habilitation degree in Quantum Electronics and Laser Technology from the Technical University of Vienna, where since 1991 she has been a researcher, since 1999 Hertha‐Firnberg Fellow and Lecturer, and since 2003 a University Lecturer (Univ. Doz.). In 2006 she was a visiting professor at the Universite Paris Sud in Orsay, France. In 2007 she became a full professor of physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, where she is leading a Laser Physics group, concentrating on the development of femtosecond solid‐state and fiber lasers based on novel materials.
Irina T. Sorokina is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the leader of the Optical Interaction Science Division of OSA, member of the International and MES Councils at OSA, the board member of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division of EPS.
In 2004 she was awarded the Snell Premium IEE Award for her contributions to the development of Cr:ZnS/Cr:ZnSe lasers. In 2009 she was elected to the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
